| BSmith24's Full Review: Stewart Brand - How Buildings Learn: What Happens ... |
Who says all college textbooks are boring? I spotted this book on the shelves my first semester in school, and talked myself out of plunking down the $25 for it even though it looked very interesting. Finally, last year, it was required reading in one of my architectural history courses.
Brand takes readers through the "layers" of a building, explaining how these layers change over time, and how buildings can be designed to anticipate change. The lessons that this book teaches are of particular value to those in the design professions, but would also interest anyone thinking of building a new home or business.
With drawings and photos to illustrate his points, Brand shows how buildings grow, decay, and change uses. Not only are high-end buildings explored, but such low-road structures as mobile homes, barns, and gas stations are given consideration.
An easy read, this book could be polished off in one sitting. I recommend it to anyone with an interest in the built environment. Brand's ideas are the answer to making buildings last.
